Beekeeper Cellars, Zinfandel, Hidden Hillside Reserve, Sonoma County 2016 – 96 Pts
About The Vintage:
2016 brought together a great vintage, and a team of winemakers prepared to do something special. Armed with new T4 french oak barrels, and battle tested with the difficult 2015 harvest, the 2016 was a joy and literally we just had to get out of the way and let this wine make itself. Amazing fruit concentration, uniform ripeness and ultra expressive. The Hidden Hillside refers to the western facing slopes that both these high altitude (1500 feet) sites come from - as you look at the sunset, these are the hidden hillsides.
At pressing, we put our free run juice in newer wood; then we do a selection of the best newer and 1 year old barrels for this program… we are looking for bold, beautiful and brash character to blend and watch. We release this only in great vintages and are excited about this wines potential. Drinks now but will improve as it moves down the run way… I would love to pop a bottle with you in about 5 to 10 years.
Only 40 cases of this wine were produced.
96 Pt. review from Connoisseur's Guide:
"Beekeeper has a knack for making deep and dramatic Zinfandels that show off the grape's more serious side, and this decidedly serious edition is about as deep and well-filled as they come. It is slightly supple with very fine-grained tannins lending good vinous grip and ensuring years and years of steady growth, but it is persuasive, highly concentrated fruit that holds sway every step of the way and hold and holds in an amazingly long finish. We admit that the age the wine deserves will not come easy, but every effort should be made to resist its present temptations and find a quiet place in the cellar where it can evolve and gain in beauty for the next half-dozen years."
